CRUST – a baking company Announces Plans for National Donut Day, June 3:

Charitable Giving and Opening of the Donut Vault Part of Donut Day Plans

FENTON, MI -  CRUST in Downtown Fenton has big plans to celebrate the 79th - Annual National Donut Day on Friday, June 3.  CRUST will open its doors at 6:00 a.m. with a special assortment of their award-winning donuts available for purchase while they last.  CRUST Cares, the bakery’s community fundraising program, will donate 10% of the day’s sales to Fenton’s Meet Up and Eat Up summer lunch program for area students.  The program is offered by Fenton Area Public Schools in partnership with the USDA and ensures all children ages 18 and under are able to enjoy a free hot meal, regardless of household income.

National Donut Day was established in 1938 by The Salvation Army to honor the men and women who served donuts and offered comfort to American soldiers behind the front lines during World War I.  During the war, Salvation Army workers established canteens or social centers called “huts” that served baked goods, provided writing supplies and stamps, and offered basic services to soldiers, like clothes-mending.  As often as possible, donuts and hot coffee were carried to troops in the trenches to bring comfort and supplement rations.

“Our mission statement includes a commitment to giving back to the communities in which we operate,” says CRUST co-owner Mike Green.  “Sure, National Donut Day is a lot of fun for us as a bakery, but honoring the sentiment of the day – giving back to an organization that ensures kids in our community have access to a good meal all summer long – that gives the day purpose.”

The Meet Up and Eat Up summer lunch program is partially funded by the USDA, but Fenton Area Public Schools’ Food Service covers costs incurred beyond USDA funding. A donation from CRUST Cares will help offset those expenses and allow for the purchase baby food items and additional fresh fruit and vegetables. Last year, the Fenton Meet Up and Eat Up program served between 80 and 225 meals per day. For more information about the summer lunch program, contact Anna Goss, Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) Coordinator, 810-591-4709.

In celebration of National Donut Day, CRUST will be opening their donut vault and bringing a number of recipes out of retirement just for June 3.  Available flavors will include:  PB and J, lemon-filled brioche, apple-filled kronut, toasted coconut, maple bacon, old-fashioned nutty, salted caramel, and several others.  CRUST’s donuts were voted some of the best in Michigan as part of mLive’s Michigan’s Best series.  For a complete list of Donut Day flavors and ordering information, visit www.crustandbeyond.com.

Adding to the Donut Day festivities will be Pat and AJ in the Morning from radio station CARS108.  They will be broadcasting live from CRUST from 7-9 a.m.  Mike Green will also announce the winner of the fourth-annual Create CRUST’s Next Donut Contest, selected from over 70 creative entries submitted via social media earlier this month.

CRUST stretches for nearly a block under cheerful yellow awnings at 104 W. Caroline.  Large glass windows allow visitors to see into the production areas where breads, pies and pastries are made by hand in small batches every day.  CRUST’s artisan breads were recently voted Mid-Michigan’s Best Bread, while their pies were also ranked best in Genesee County in a people’s choice vote in late 2014.   Other sweet selections include:  Viennoiserie pastries, cookies, muffins, scones, decorated event cakes and fruit pies.  A popular lunch menu features made-to-order sandwiches, rustic pizzas, salads and soup.

The bakery opens daily at 7 a.m.  Indoor and patio seating are available.  For more information, call the bakery, 810-629-8882, follow us on Facebook, or visit our website, www.crustandbeyond.com.
