Sagano Sushi

A flash of flame in the corner of your eye, followed by gasps, applause and the scent of something delicious to come. You have arrived at the recently opened Sagano Japanese Bistro in the new Cornerstone building on North Leroy Street. A journey of culinary experience and successful growth landed Sagano Japanese Bistro's 4th location in the heart of the Cornerstone building, Fenton's most recent downtown addition.

According to business partner Jim Teuber, Shiro Inoue, named the restaurant after his birthplace of Sagano, Japan. “Shiro is a sushi chef by trade, many of his friends own Japanese Steakhouses and had always encouraged him to expand his Japanese Bistro by adding a steakhouse. Shiro had worked as a Sushi Chef from Japan to New York to Rochester, Michigan. In 2003, he and his wife, Inja, opened their own restaurant, Sagano Japanese Bistro, in Flint Township. In 2005, he expanded his bistro by adding 2500 square feet of space and 10 hibachi tables, creating the first Sagano Japanese Bistro and Steakhouse. The Flint Township location quickly became the talk of the town and to this day remains wildly popular. In 2009, Shiro expanded, opening Sagano Japanese Steakhouse in downtown Brighton on Main-street. The Brighton location features 12 hibachi tables. Meanwhile, the Flint Township location continued to grow and was bursting at the seams, so in 2010 two additional private dining rooms were added. The addition included 4 additional hibachi tables and a 5th grill was installed solely for the purpose of cooking to go orders. The year 2013 saw the addition of Sagano of Clarkston, complete with 13 hibachi tables. The Clarkston location also boasts a “super table” that allows for larger parties of 13-15 people to be seated at the same table.

While in the process of building the Clarkston location, the developers of the Cornerstone Building in Fenton approached Shiro, urging him to bring Sagano to Fenton. Jim mentions, “While Fenton and Grand Blanc had been considered in the past, Shiro was always worried about building too close to the Flint market. After 10 years of success in Flint Township, Shiro realized that the market could indeed support a location closer to home. He felt that the Cornerstone Building would be the perfect place to locate it and an agreement was struck placing Sagano as the anchor tenant of the building." While in the planning phase, the construction costs came back considerably higher than Shiro's other locations. They gave serious consideration as to whether or not it made business sense to incur those additional costs. The Cornerstone project and the expansion of downtown Fenton make the location a perfect fit. The convenient location lends itself to easy access from all of the surrounding communities. Teuber says," In the end, it was clear that the location and the beautiful new Cornerstone building made it the right place to be, and in Shiro's mind, the only place to be in Fenton. The end result of the overall project has him believing that he was exactly right."

The interior is inviting and brightly lit, with views of Fenton clearly visible through the large paned windows of the new Cornerstone building. The 4300 square foot restaurant includes a sushi and cocktail bar, 4 hibachi tables and a separate dining area for those who prefer a more private setting. The dining experience features delicious made from scratch soups, salad dressing and dipping sauces. Jim says,"They are very tasty and while most customers cannot put their finger on the overall experience, it is actually those items that compliment the meal so well, that really put us over the top." He adds, "Our sushi receives the same kind of rave reviews as well, consistently being compared to the best sushi that our customers have experienced with favorable reviews." The hibachi chefs are not only skilled but personable and truly entertaining. Prepared to be wowed by spinning eggs, flying shrimp, volcanic eruptions and absolutely delicious entrees cooked to your specifications. Delicious hibachi options include, shrimp, scallops, filet mignon and chicken accompanied by savory rice and vegetables. Appetizers, soups, salads, bistro dishes and dessert options are also available on the versatile menu that has something for nearly every taste.

Whether lunch or dinner, you'll always find an abundance of wide eyes and smiles all around. Much of the success of Sagano Japanese Bistro is that it is a great place to celebrate special occasions. It is also a perfect choice for taking young children who tend to love the atmosphere and the food. Jim says, "There are not many restaurants that lean towards fine dining, that a parent can take a child to, where both parent and child will be happy!"
