The Game

Imagine turning back time to 1837 and actually being there at the poker game where the stakes were high and Fenton got its name. In celebration of the 1 year anniversary of “The Game” sculpture unveiling at the Fenton Community and Cultural Center, we've uploaded photos submitted in a collage and video, Oct 5 2018. Thank you to all who joined in and played your hand in this momentous occasion!

Historical Museum

History is an important part of life in Fenton.

For example it is a point of civic pride that the name Fenton was chosen by the winner of a card game on August 24, 1837. William M. Fenton (a lawyer and land speculator) beat out Robert LeRoy (a land speculator) and changed the history of the town forever. The consolation prize given to Robert LeRoy, was putting his name to LeRoy Street, the main route through the City.

The Historical Society is very active hosting events to keep local history alive, like a History Walk through the Oakwood Cemetery in the fall.

The A.J. Phillips building, which houses the museum archives (shown right) was built in 1900 by local factory owner A.J. Phillips for his personal office. From the time of his death in 1904 until 1987 the Fenton library called this building home. When the library outgrew the building, moving the historical museum in seemed like a perfect fit for showing off the Queen Anne architecture and the Victorian room with original items, including A.J. Phillips desk.

The Historical Society is the keeper of school history for Fenton and has an area of the Museum devoted to it. The Museum has the names of every Fenton graduate dating back to 1869.
