The resurgence of Downtown Fenton will be celebrated in a groundbreaking ceremony for The Cornerstone Project on Monday July 8th at 5:30 pm. This is a historic event that spotlights the rebuilding of a  historic downtown and the economic revitalization of Fenton.

ďThe Cornerstone is yet another important piece of rebuilding Fenton's downtown. As acting Chairman l want to  thank everyone involved and welcome everyone to the historic groundbreaking and revitalization of our great city,Ē said Fenton DDA Chairman Craig Schmidt.

The Cornerstone building is one of four major projects that are helping the community move forward from the era of urban renewal. The downtown Streetseape project is slated to begin in early 20 I4. The project includes improving streets, sidewalks and creating more of a walkable downtown. Renovations and restoration of The Fenton Community and Cultural Center are underway. An addition will make room for more art and cultural activities. Gottlieb Eliel Saarinen and his son Eero Saarinen designed this architectural gem in 1938.

The community is anxiously awaiting the opening of the new restaurant in the redeveloped Old Fenton Fire Hall. The owners are from the renowned Clarkston Union Restaurant. Rooftop seating and eventually a retractable roof are part of the new design. A late September/early October opening is anticipated.

ďThese four projects represent over $12 million in private and public investments in our downtown district. The economic impact will result in more jobs, more tax revenue for our public entities and a more vibrant downtown district for our residents and visitors to enjoy,Ē said City Manager Lynn Markland.

Fenton is turning the corner in revitalization of the downtown and economic growth. The July Cornerstone groundbreaking will mark the beginning of the journey into the future. State and žocal dignitaries will attend the festivities.

"We have waited for this day for over forty years and it is so exciting. It is the resurgence of Downtown Fenton and l invite everyone to join us in this historical event. The dramatic change in downtown with the new building and the streetscape will be a sight to behold. Your downtown district in the City of Fenton is moving forward!" said Mayor Sue Osborn.
